Text:

I've heard in the news that a man has won 20 million dollars at the national lottery. What would I do with so much money? I have planned everything in case it happened. If I were a millionaire, I would stop working. I'm sure, I wouldn't work anymore. Then, I would give half of the money to relatives, friends and foundations. I know they would make good use of the capital. With the rest of the money I would buy a big sailing boat with a big cabin and a beautiful flag. I would learn how to use the sails and the rudder, and I would sail to an unknown island where the only inhabitants were some parrots, monkeys and lizards. On the island I would hang a hammock between two palm trees. I would spend the day reading, writing, dreaming and looking at the skyline. I would eat bananas, coconuts and pineapples. Once a week I would sail back to civilization, and I would always know that I would be able to go back to my private desert island.

Uses
The second conditional is used:

• to express unreal or improbable conditions
in the present or future.
• to give advice.
• to make suggestions. We often use were instead of was in the main clause, specially in a formal style.

We can use could or might instead of would in the main clause. In this case, could means 'would be able to' and might means 'would perhaps'. We can also use unless, as long as, providing/provided (that), etc., to express the condition.
